Website layout in plain words: what it is and why everything depends on it
What layout is, how it differs from design and a CMS, why the same mockup behaves differently on a phone, and how to check the quality.
Layout is the process of turning a design mockup into a working page: text, buttons, images and forms become HTML markup, CSS styles and a small amount of JavaScript. In plain words, the designer draws how it should look, and the layout makes it actually look and behave that way in a browser.
Design, layout and a CMS are different things
| What it is | What it is responsible for | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| Design | How the page looks and how the user journey is structured | Designer |
| Layout | How the mockup becomes code and behaves in the browser | Frontend developer |
| CMS | How you change texts and pages without a programmer | Developer and you |
They are often confused. A beautiful Figma mockup is not a website yet: it has to be built, connected to forms, checked on phones and only then put into an admin panel. Bad layout breaks even good design; careful layout lifts a simple one.
What good layout does
- Matches the mockup: spacing, sizes, fonts and colours follow the design, not “approximately”.
- Adapts: no horizontal scrolling on a phone, tablet or large screen.
- Loads fast: optimised images and fonts, minimal unnecessary code.
- Uses semantics: headings, lists and buttons are real elements, not styled divs.
- Works from a keyboard and with a screen reader: focus is visible, forms are labelled.
- Works across browsers: Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge without surprises.
- Does not jump while loading: images and blocks have dimensions reserved in advance.
- Is SEO-ready: proper headings, image alt text and clean HTML.
Why “everything breaks” on a phone
Because the mockup was built for a fixed width. Hard pixel sizes, absolute positioning and images without proportions start overlapping on a narrow screen. Good layout is designed as flexible from the start: a grid, wrapping, width limits and deliberate breakpoints.
How to check the quality
- Open the site on your own phone, not only in a desktop emulator.
- Zoom to 200%: the text should stay readable and nothing should be clipped.
- Navigate with the keyboard only: Tab, Enter, Escape — everything should work.
- Switch to a slow network and see whether content jumps while loading.
- Test the forms: the request arrives, errors are clear, the button does not hang.
- Open the browser console: there should be no errors.
- Run Lighthouse: speed and accessibility will show the weak spots.
What it costs and where you can save
Layout is part of the website cost, but it can be ordered separately from a ready mockup. That is cheaper than a full cycle, but then you prepare the structure, design and content yourself. A ready theme or a website builder also saves money at the start, but limits you: a custom block has to be “bolted on”, and updates depend on someone else's code.
